MSM or methylsulfonylmethane is a natural anti-inflammatory and effective pain killer.  It is often used in humans to treat many of the same things as methionine derivative SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine), including pain, inflammation, allergies, arthritis, and the maintenance of normal keratin levels in hair, skin, and nails. MSM offers many benefits for pets, namely by helping to relax and soothe tired and inflamed joints caused by arthritis or joint breakdown and pain caused by old age. The compound is also often given to horses although most commonly given to dogs and cats.

How does it work you ask?

Sulfur (or methyl-sulf-onylmethane) is a primary maintenance compound needed for cell membrane permeability by regulating the sodium potassium pump. This system allows fluids as well as nutrients to flow into the cell and allows waste and toxins to flow out of the cell. Each time the body removes toxins from the cells, it also removes the compound that neutralized the toxin=sulfur. This is why sulfur is needed in the diet on a frequent and regular basis

Clinical trials of MSM are limited but promising. A clinically significant effect was observed on respiratory tract inflammation and function in humans. Clinical outcomes in animals receiving MSM for arthritis are also encouraging.

MSM is commonly accepted as a critical component for joint repair but it also works as an antioxidant in the dog or cat’s body. It helps to clean out the bloodstream and flushes toxins from the cells, important for removing free radicals from the body and keeping it in a pristine state. Working as an antioxidant, MSM helps reduce allergy symptoms. As a joint healer, it relieves pain and inflammation, allowing your pet to move more freely, without feeling as much pain and discomfort. It can completely eliminate the actual cause of pain resulting from inflammation. Whether due to arthritis or any other cause, the effects of MSM can be quite unbelievable and can truly help your dog or cat get their life back.

Unlike many other compounds and products available for treating arthritis and joint conditions in dogs and cats, the MSM compound does not cause many unwanted side effects. You can give your pet MSM chewable tablets, or use the powder sprinkled over their food. Make sure you listen to your veterinarian’s instructions and only give your pet as much as suggested.

MSM is reported to strengthen the structural bond of connective tissue and help reduce scar tissue by altering cross-linkages which contribute to scar formation. MSM has been widely accepted as having powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing properties, blocking pain perception in certain nerve fibers before the pain impulse reaches the brain.

MSM may also strengthen the body’s natural barriers against allergens. Oral MSM has been claimed to help alleviate the response to pollen and food in people and may do the same for pets. MSM may help to decrease allergic sinusitis symptoms by fortifying the structure of the mucous membrane tissues.
